Oslo & Central Norway

Oslo & Central Norway

Oslo and the adjacent region of Norway, referred to as “Østlandet” (the eastern country) in Norwegian covers the area from slightly south of Oslo, and all the way past the central mountainous areas.

Østlandet includes the area “fjellet” (the mountain) —a term used by people from Oslo and the east to describe the high mountain areas north of Oslo like Rondane, Jotunheimen, and Hardangervidda.

These mountains separate Østlandet from the west and Trøndelag county. “Vestlandet” (Western Norway) begins west of these mountain ranges, typically after crossing Hardangervidda or Filefjell Mountain.

To the north, Østlandet ends where Trøndelag starts, northern central Norway, which is north of the Dovre mountains (where you find the huge musk oxes), around Dombås, where Eastern Norway transitions into the central region.
