If you’re planning a trip to the Lofoten Islands, chances are you’ve already seen photos of a tiny fishing village on a small island surrounded by dramatic mountains and deep blue sea.

That place is Henningsvær, one of the most picturesque destinations in Northern Norway.

Often called the “Venice of Lofoten,” this small village blends authentic fishing traditions with a surprisingly vibrant cultural scene.

I have visited many times, and now that I am a Lofoten local (living in Reine, western Lofoten), I also went there to celebrate New Year’s Eve last year, as a local tourist, which was perfect!

Map of the Best Things to Do in Henningsvær

Henningsvær is compact and easy to explore on foot. Most attractions are located on the two main islands connected by bridges.

Because the village is small, you can easily see the main highlights in half a day, though many visitors end up staying longer.

1. Visit the Famous Henningsvær Football Stadium

A deep green football field covering almost an entire island, short of a cluster of white wooden buildings at the tip of the island, on the dramatic edge of Henningsvær in Lofoten, surrounded by dark blue Arctic waters and mountain ranges under a pale blues sky

The Henningsvær football field is arguably the village’s most famous attraction.

Built on a small rocky island surrounded by the sea, this football pitch has become one of the most photographed sports fields in the world. It gained international attention after drone photos went viral online.

The field is used by the local club and sits on an islet just outside the village center.

From above, it looks like a green rectangle floating in the ocean, a surreal sight and one of the most iconic images of the Lofoten Islands.

Photography tip: Walk across the bridge toward the football field for a great view, or fly a drone from a safe distance (following local regulations).

2. Wander the Colorful Harbor and Fishing Docks

The U-shaped harbor surrounded by old wooden houses is the heart of Henningsvær.

Here you’ll see:

  • Red rorbuer fisherman cabins
  • Wooden docks
  • Traditional fish-drying racks
  • Small fishing boats and sailboats

These wooden racks are where stockfish is born, cod is hung here to dry in the winter and early spring months, and from here the dried cod has been exported from Lofoten for centuries.

The harbor area is also where you’ll find some of the best photo spots in the village, as well as small shops, cafes, and restaurants. The mix of colorful buildings, mountains, and sea makes it one of the most beautiful places in Northern Norway.

3. Explore the Art Scene and Galleries

A narrow alleyway between old red wooden houses on a winter day in Henningsvær Lofoten in Norway, snow covering the ground, and you can see the pale blue sky over the alleyway that is decorated with small colorful flags

Despite its small size, Henningsvær has one of the most vibrant art scenes in the Lofoten Islands.

Over the past two decades, artists and creative entrepreneurs have transformed old industrial buildings into galleries and cultural spaces.

Today you’ll find:

  • Contemporary art galleries
  • Photography exhibitions
  • Handmade crafts and local design

Check these out:

One of the most recent cultural spaces is the old wood factory building, Trevarefabrikken, which was transformed into a creative hub also featuring restaurants, events, and accommodation.

This artistic energy is one of the reasons Henningsvær has become known as the creative heart of Lofoten.

4. Enjoy Coffee, Bakeries, and Cozy Cafés

A cafe counter with lots of pastries, a black wall with hand written menus, and a guest waiting at the counter standing on the red rug on the wooden floor, warm lighting.

One of the best ways to experience Henningsvær is simply to slow down and enjoy its cafés.

Despite the remote location, the village has an impressive food scene, with specialty coffee, bakeries, and seafood restaurants.

You dont want to miss tasting fresh pastries and super-soft cinnamon buns, along with your favorite coffee or tea, with iconic harbor views.

Henningsvær Lysstøyperi and Café is most famous for its cinnamon and vanilla buns, both of which are delicious. And of course, the handmade candles you can find there.

Cafe Knusarn is located in Henningsvær Guest House, a mix between a cafe and a restaurant.

Despite being in the Arctic, there are days during summer when you can enjoy a treat on one of the outdoor terraces, along with a cold drink or a taste of the local seafood dishes.

Travelers have even said things like that the café culture here feels more like a small European coastal town than a remote Arctic village.

5. Photograph the Most Beautiful Streets in Lofoten

A snow covered street with a green bush with twinkeling lights next to a hand writter restaurant sign, in Henningsvær, Lofoten in blue winter daylight

Henningsvær (well, the entire Lofoten to be honest) is a dream destination for photographers pretty much year-round.

In the winter, you get the soft, magical pinkish-blue light; in the shoulder season, you can find yourself in the middle of “a lot of weather” with powerful shades of grey; and in the summer, you have the never-ending days with a golden hour that lasts and lasts.

Every twist and turn around here offers a postcard-worthy scene.

  • Colorful houses reflected in the harbor
  • Drying racks filled with cod
  • Narrow streets with mountain views
  • Boats moored in quiet canals
  • And of course, the mountains, you just have to see them for yourself.

Early morning and late evening provide the best light, but remember that the timings for “early morning” will vary dramatically depending on the season you are visiting.

In January, the early morning is around 1 pm and lasts for about 15 minutes. In the summer, early morning is probably around 3 am, somewhere when the sunset becomes sunrise, overlapping before the sun ascends again for a new day.

So during the midnight sun season, the most spectacular lights are between 11 pm and 3 am, when the sun hovers just over the horizon and leaves long, slow shadows over every little corner of Lofoten.

6. Go Sea Kayaking or RIB Safari

Kayakers on the greenish blue waters of Lofoten, surrounded by mountains under a blue sky with scattered white clouds

If slow strolling around quiet streets is not your thing, dont worry. There are lots of fun things to do for adventure seekers in Henningsvær and around.

Some of the most popular adventures are:

  • Sea kayaking through small islands (slow, but spectacular)
  • RIB boat safaris along the coast
  • Wildlife watching tours
  • Fishing trips

If you are dreaming of whale watching, though, Henningsvær and Lofoten are not the true Mecca for this. The nearest places for whale watching are on Andøya Island, north of Lofoten, and in Tromsø.

The waters surrounding Vestfjorden are rich in marine life and offer spectacular views of the jagged peaks of the Lofoten Islands.

7. Visit Local Shops and Artisan Stores

Henningsvær is also known for its small independent shops.

Here you can find:

  • Handmade wool products
  • Scandinavian design items
  • Local photography prints
  • Unique souvenirs from Lofoten
  • …and of course stockfish

Shopping in Henningsvær feels like exploring a small creative village rather than a typical tourist destination.

However, in summer, this is one of the most popular destinations, so don’t expect to be by yourself here.

8. Hike Festvågtinden – The Best View Over Henningsvær

If you want the best view in Henningsvær, hike to the summit of Festvågtinden.

This mountain rises directly behind the island village (you actually pass it on your way from the E10 down to Henningsvær), and offers a panoramic view of the harbor, islands, and surrounding peaks.

Key facts about the hike:

  • Elevation: 541 meters
  • Distance: about 2–3 km round trip
  • Time: 2–3 hours
  • Difficulty: moderate to challenging

From the summit of Festvågtinden, you can see the entire settlements of Henningsvær spread across the islands below.

This is truly one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area, and probably in the entire Lofoten Islands archipelago.

9. Hike To Glomtinden Viewpoint

Another fantastic hike near Henningsvær is Glomtinden, which offers sweeping views across Austvågøya and Vestfjorden.

It’s less famous than Festvågtinden and slightly easier to ascend, but with equally impressive views, especially on clear days when you can see far across the Lofoten archipelago, or as we call it, “the Lofoten wall” (of mountains).

Key facts about the hike:

  • Elevation: 250–300 meters
  • Distance: 3–5 km total (depending on start point)
  • Time: 1.5–3 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate (short, but steep in sections)

10. Sample Amazing Seafood In Henningsvær Restaurants

Cozy foyer with warm lighting, a seating area, glittering christmas tree, and a bar at the end of the room at night

Despite its size, Henningsvær has a surprisingly impressive culinary scene.

Generally, restaurants in Lofoten and Henningsvær focus on fresh seafood, short-traveled produce, and locally sourced ingredients from the immediate area or Northern Norway.

Here are six really good options.

  1. Vind Brasserie is the restaurant at Henningsvær Bryggehotell, and also where I had my three-course dinner last New Year’s Eve.
Here you will find super-friendly staff, elegant interior, warm lighting (important in winter), and amazing food.
  2. Klatrekafeen has been around for decades. I remember visiting probably 20 years ago, and it is still going strong! I was there, too, on New Year’s Eve last year (after dinner), and the festive ambiance was impeccable.
  3. Trevarefabrikken is a multi-purpose creative hub in Henningsvær where you can sleep, visit the cafe, restaurant, or join in one of the many cultural events during the year. Created in the remnants of the old woodwork factory (hence the name), this amazing place has become, in a few years, one of the most iconic places to stay, eat, and have fun in Henningsvær.
  4. SJY1 Cafe is modern, slightly experimental, and upscale, offering tasting menus and creative presentation. The food is served very minimally and stylishly, very “Nordic” with no fuss. You go here for something more curated and memorable, to experience food as an idea.
  5. Sabina comes across as a warm, intimate, and modern restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food gets a lot of praise. It’s where you go if you want to feel relaxed, welcomed, and quietly impressed.
  6. Fiskekrogen is the classic, old-school seafood restaurant in Henningsvær. The location is hard to beat, right on the harbor with that iconic Lofoten view. When it’s good, it’s really good: fish soup, mussels, and fresh cod dishes get a lot of praise in reviews.
However, some guests have expressed disappointment at Fiskekrogen, and it is hard to say whether that is deserved or stems from biased expectations. You’d better judge for yourself.

Either way, when eating in Henningsvær, you should definitely try: one of the stockfish dishes, Arctic char, fresh seafood soups, and a locally made bacalao.

You can thank me later.

11. Go Northern Lights Hunting

Spectacular green northern lights in a spectacular pattern across the sky over majestic snow covered mountains in Lofoten Norway, by one of the many bridges connecting the islands in Lofoten, you can even see the stars through the green vail of light in the sky.

If you visit during winter, or between late September and March, one of your goals is probably experiencing the Northern Lights.

The Aurora Borealis is frequently present in Lofoten, and Henningsvær is no exception. The only issue is that you need clear skies and a decent KPI score.

Clear skies are a non-negotiable, but I have experienced spectacular lights all over the sky on a KPI of only 2,1, so anything is possible.

Strictly speaking, you can often just pop out of your rorbu fisherman’s cabin and look up, and catch the lights if they come. Just find a spot with very little artificial light.

If you want to embark on a whole experience, though, there are companies offering Northern Lights Tours with professional photographers that drive you around to find the best possible spot to both experience and photograph the lights.

Quick Guide: What Is Special About Henningsvær?

Henningsvær village has a history stretching back to at least the 1500s, when it was already an important fishing settlement supplying cod to European markets.

During the peak of the Lofoten cod fisheries, thousands of fishermen came here each winter to work during the skrei season, the migratory (huge) cod.

Today, fishing is still going on here, and Henningsvær is the heart of the annual skrei world championship fishing competition.

However, becoming such a popular destination has transformed Henningsvær into a creative center that also offers art, a creative, multicultural society, and exquisite dining, while still being the perfect starting point for outdoor life and nature experiences.

It’s also one of the most photogenic places in Norway, and many visitors consider it a highlight of their Lofoten itinerary.

Wrap Up Best Things To Do In Henningsvær

Years back, I remember visiting Henningsvær, and my most vivid memory is the fish soup at Klatrecafeen. And it is so cool that this place is still going strong, creating a heritage, and is still such a solid social hub and food hub in Henningsvær.

Now, when I live in Lofoten myself, it was fun to visit during the New Year’s celebration, and also see for the first time the “new boy in town”, the concept of the Trevarefabrikken (the old woodwork factory), a concept birthed by two guys from Bergen (!!).

Henningsvær is a unique and iconic, historically important and interesting destination, and a small, super cozy village with a one-of-a-kind ambiance.

Even if there was nothing to “do” there, I would say visit anyway!
